John Massee: Lions At The Gates Of Khorsabad

Opening at the Goldleaf Gallery (inside Goldleaf Framemakers of Santa Fe) on Friday, July 18, 2008 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm

John Massee has taken The Lion Hunt of Ashurbanipal, a low relief carving in the British Museum unearthed at Nineveh in the 1850’s, as inspiration and constructed Sculptures of some the Lions depicted. The Palace of Ashurbanipal, (645 BC), was built at Nineveh in what is now northern Iraq. Also will be shown a life size mechanical LION on an 8’ plinth that rises and sits as water dribbles into a trough.

Massee says, “I’ve loved the power of the lions in this relief and what with all the troubles in the Iraq area I thought it a timely motif...”

As well as the the Lion sculptures Massee has produced various posters showing the many drawings used to produce the sculptures.
